White Toyotas branded with the black caliphate seal, carrying IS fighters and their large calibre weapons into war zones in Syria, Iraq and Libya, feature prominently in images and videos posted on social media by the terrorist group.
US officials have recently asked Toyota to figure out why its vehicles are showing up in so many ISIS videos. Some conspiracy theorists have even latched on the phenomenon as supposed “proof” the United State government is funding the militants. The Toyota Hilux pickup has been a fixture of several extremist movements over the past few decades.
Toyota has said it maintains “a strict policy to not sell vehicles to potential purchasers who may use or modify them for paramilitary or terrorist activities”. Toyota distributors in the region said they did not know how the trucks reached ISIS. The company stopped selling vehicles in Syria several years ago.
The Hilux is apparently a durable truck that has proven useful for terrorists who are fighting against lightly armed special forces. And all officials agree on the fact that Toyota “should do more” to get to the bottom of Hilux' popularity mystery.
